Science Based Targets Initiative Recognizes RealTyme’s Climate Action Targets
We are pleased to announce that RealTyme has been recognized for its climate action targets by The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As part of our commitment to reach zero carbon operational footprint in 2023 and our ongoing mission to provide sustainable technology for our clients, our ambitions are to go beyond the targets set for SBTi. This includes reducing scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas emissions by 100% by 2023. Our 1.5 aligned emission auction targets have been validated by SBTi. Our commitments include:
Near-term science-based targets include achieving scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reduction by 2030. Net-zero targets include long-term science-based targets achieved by 2050 in scope 1, 2 and 3 reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions, and a commitment to neutralize any unabated emissions once the long-term science-based target is achieved.
Companies that sign up for the Business Ambition for 1.5° Celsius campaign by committing to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard will be recognized as a company taking climate action. The Net-zero standard provides companies with a clear blueprint of how to bring their net-zero plans in line with the science behind climate change. RealTyme are one of 3,000 businesses featured on the SBTi companies taking action table.
What is the Science Based Target Initiative?
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body that helps to drive ambitious climate action in the private sector and champions SMEs who provide science-based target setting as a commitment to a low-carbon economy. It’s a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The SBTi promotes and defines best practice in science-based target setting and invites SMEs to submit their targets through a target validation route. This is a thorough assessment of a SMEs commitment to achieving science-based targets in both the near-term and long-term. The SBTi determines that for a company to meet net-zero emissions it needs to have reached a state of no impact on the climate from its GHG emissions. You can learn more about the SBTi at their website.
Why are Science-based targets important?
With the urgency for climate action described by the UN as a “code red for humanity,” science-based targets involve reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the level of decarbonization goals set out in the Paris Agreement. We are pleased to have been recognized for going above and beyond these targets.
The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to below 2°C, pushing towards limiting this to 1.5°C. Near-term science-based targets include achieving scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions reduction by 2030. Net-zero targets include long-term science-based targets achieved by 2050 in scope 1, 2 and 3 reducing GHG emissions, and a commitment to neutralize any unabated emissions once the long-term science-based target is achieved.
